Amritsar Today
“Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
-George Santayana
Almost 70 years after the Partition, Amritsar is a meagre city devoid of its former
glory. It is a pilgrimage spot for Sikhs, yet economically it is stagnant.
Unfortunately, unlike the holocaust experiences in Germany, barely any effort
has been made to record the atrocities of the past which continue to plague the
hearts of the survivors. Currently, Amritsar has a 68.94% Sikh population,
27.74% Hindu population and a mere 0.5% Muslim population.
Though it still isn’t what it once was, it has reinvented itself to be the amongst
the holiest of Sikh sites. The partition has taught us the dangers of inefficient
planning, but more importantly, it proved to be a win without any victory.
